A few tips and tricks to help you throw a beautiful Christmas dinner on a budget

Christmas is a magical moment for so many of us. I get very excited when December starts for a very good reason: Advent calendar! Yes, that joy of discovering a new chocolate every single day until THE big day is exciting. I love walking around during Christmas time and see these beautiful decorations. When we say Christmas and Holidays, we mostly think of all the food and the cocktails we will be trying.

Unfortunately, Christmas also comes with expenses and sometimes, this holiday can become a nightmare. 1 ou 2 Cocktails and I partnered up (once again), to give you a few ideas on how to save on your table decoration and food.

First thing first, have a look around you

We sometimes forget that we actually have a lot more than we think. Indeed, your place might have everything you need to throw the best Christmas dinner. Revisited your items is an important step when making your Christmas table. Before going to the store to buy a long list, take some time to gather everything you could potentially use for your table. Don’t be shy to try new things, these will probably be the highlight of the night. Here is a list of the items you might already have:

Different plates you can actually use to create some amazing mix and match with your table settings. Wooden boxes you could use to present the food and give your Christmas table some height. My favourite detail is also the cinnamon stick we used as a decoration on each plate.

Don’t forget the candles! Candles are something we can easily find at home. They add something wonderful to your table and make everything cosy.  Add some throws/blankets on a few chairs. Christmas is also a moment with your family and friends where you want to feel good. Hot chocolates, candles, blankets are all part of this celebration.

Use an old curtain as your table runner. Finally, if buying flowers is not part of your budget, have a look outside and find a nice tree with cones. These can be used as a nice centerpiece on your table and will give an amazing smell to the room!

Make your dried fruits, spices and leaves part of your decoration

My Christmas table in collaboration with 1 ou 2 Cocktails wouldn’t be the same without dried fruits. Why? Because we often decorate a nice cocktail with a simple dried fruit. My favourite detail; the cinnamon stick on each plate. You could also replace the cinnamon stick for a nice tree branch with cones. Dried oranges (or a different fruit), around the table. Like the cinnamon sticks, you could potentially use spices like cloves or star anise. Use leaves like thyme, dill, rosemary to decorate your food.

When doing your shopping, think outside the box

I believe having an open mind is the key to a successful Christmas table. Indeed, looking for things other than the typical Christmas decoration will make your dinner table special and unique. Instead of buying the usual cloth napkins, use a cheaper alternative like painter’s towels.

Buy items that would add some height to your table like wood boxes or a vase that you can turn upside down. Shop in a different section than the holiday aisle to save some money. In fact, you might find something beautiful that is not necessarily for Christmas but will do the job just as much!

String lights will add the perfect final touch. You can find them for very cheap but the result will be amazing. Click here.

Plan ahead and do your Christmas shopping AFTER Christmas

Yes, you’ve heard (or read) me. The best way to find amazing deals is to shop at the end of the season. Since every single store wants to get rid of their stock, you will get your hand on discounted items. To make sure your items don’t go out of style, aim for neutral colours or plaids.

But not too worry, I found some great deals here if your Christmas shopping had to be done for this year! Amazon is also an amazing place where you can find amazing things for quite cheap. Last tip for your shopping; places like Anthropologie, Marshall and Homesense are WONDERFUL to find great deals and unique items.

Stop making a ridiculous amount of food and add cocktails to the menu

Believe me, I understand the importance of having a full table when having people over. However, making that much food is sometimes a waste of time! Instead, focus on a small menu with less choices but with good portions. There’s no need to make 10 different salads with 6 mains. You can also get help and buy a fresh pie from a very good brand instead of making it yourself. Local businesses often have delicious pies, desserts and all sorts of homemade meals.

This will also leave you with some extra time to make cocktails for your guests. This way, you can impress them but also create an experience that everyone will remember.

You could start with a cocktail and a nice cheese platter with some spreads. This kind of food is actually very filling, easy to prepare and loved by so many. Have a look at this perfect and delicious cheese platter. Add some brussels sprouts to the table and small potatoes. This kind of food is very easy and quick to prepare but quite filling.

As for the main, since this was a small gathering, we went for a shrimp and salmon pie from Plaisirs Gastronomiques. The dessert was a delicious Christmas cocktail from our book L’Apéro au Québec and some cookies from my favourite place on earth, Costco.

L’Apéro au Québec to the rescue

When making our book L’Apéro au Québec, we realised how important and fun it was to create different tables. L’Apéro is a very unique moment where you can exchange with people but also spend time with your loved ones. In fact, L’Apéro doesn’t necessarily means that alcohol is involved. You could also change a cocktail recipe for a mocktail by tweaking the recipe a little.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year

Finally, most importantly, enjoy every minute of this holiday. Spending time with your family and friends is important as much as telling them you love them! On that note, have the most amazing Christmas!
