The 2 best fabrics for summer clothes | Temps d’un Café made with natural fibres

After studying in fashion design, my brain started to function differently. I was shopping in a very different way because I was now aware of many things. For example, I was looking at the way the clothes were made and if it was actually worth the money. But the most important criteria when buying a piece of clothing was definitely the fabric’s composition. Find out the best fabrics for summer clothes made with natural fibres.

Why linen and cotton are my favourites

For summer, when the weather is often hot and humid, linen and cotton are my favourite options. You have many pros and cons for these 2 fabrics so let’s discuss their characteristics a bit more.

Linen

Linen is a breathable fabric which is exactly what you’re looking for during summer. Fabrics like polyester for example, do not allow yourself to breathe which is why they’re horrible for hot weather. Linen dries very quickly so if you ever sweat in your clothes, you might not even feel it. This fabric also keeps you cool and doesn’t stick to your skin. The cons with linen is how easy it wrinkles but we see them as “noble wrinkles”. If you hate wrinkles, my advice to you would be to find a mix with linen and rayon. These 2 fabrics together give an amazing result and do not wrinkle as much. Since linen is an expensive fabric, you want to be careful when washing it. My suggestion is to use linen cleaning for your household that are soft and high end. My favourite laundry products are by The Laundress.

Cotton

Cotton is also part of the Best Fabrics for Summer Clothes for many reasons. The main reason is how inexpensive it is compare to linen for example. You could easily get away with a cute cotton dress for less than 50$. Like linen, cotton soaks up sweat and is very light and breathable. However, you do have to be careful since the sun can change its colour. Very important to always dry them in the shades and never in the sun directly! Like linen, you could also go with a blend to have less wrinkles but still be able to breathe properly. Cotton comes in different styles and colours and can look very elegant like this cute cotton dress from H&M. However, if you sweat way too much, cotton tends to become heavy and wet. Nevertheless, this fabric is definitely on top of my list for summer.

Try to wear oversized clothes during summer

Yes, oversized is usually my solution to everything. This allows me to be comfortable without having a fabric glued to my skin when it’s 90 degrees outside. With an oversized shirt or dress made of cotton or linen, you will actually feel like the fabric is escaping from your skin, leaving you  space to breathe and to cool down a little. With that being said, try to stay away from polyester, which for me, is the worst fabric in the universe during hot weather. One last thing to know, linen and cotton go beautifully together. As shown in these pictures, a cotton blouse, linen shorts and linen scrunchie are an amazing combination!
